Coconut Oil for Dry Lips

Coconut oil can help to hydrate your lips, but it doesn’t do this in the way that you imagine. See, this oil is known as an emollient. This means that it acts as a sealant, preventing moisture from evaporating from your lips.

Coconut oil can also improve the durability of your skin barrier preventing your lips from drying out as much in the future. What it can’t do, however, is to add moisture to your lips.

This is only possible by a substance that falls under the category of a humectant – ingredients that pull moisture from the air or lower levels of the skin to your lips. Therefore, for a truly effective coconut oil lip moisturizer the oil has to be used in conjunction with a humectant.

Can Soothe Chapped Lips

For one reason or another, your lips may have become quite chapped. This may have left them cracked, bleeding, and quite painful. The good news is that coconut oil is one of the best oils for chapped lips.

The oil has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. This works to reduce any redness, swelling, or irritation as a result of the chapped lips. Coconut oil can also reduce the risk of infection. After all, the skin barrier is compromised with cracked lips, making it easier for bacteria to get through.

Fortunately, the antimicrobial properties work to prevent bacteria from multiplying. This can ensure that the condition of your lips don’t worsen.

May Work to Prevent Wrinkles

As you may have noticed, your lips can wrinkle with age too. This typically has to do with a loss of collagen in the skin. In most cases, there is little that you can do to prevent it and you traditionally simply have to opt for a lip plumping treatment instead.

There is some evidence to prove that coconut oil can help to boost collagen turnover. While this is largely involved with wound healing, it is possible that these feature could prevent wrinkles from forming on or around your lips.

While more studies have to be done on this subject, it certainly can’t hurt to use coconut oil on your lips on a regular basis.

Here are some of the ways that you can utilize the benefits of coconut oil for your lips:

Coconut Oil as Lip Balm

If you want to use coconut oil to lock in moisture for your lips, then you can use coconut oil as chapstick. Remember, though, that you do need to use a humectant underneath it. This can be honey, glycerin, aloe vera, etc. Once you apply this layer, scoop a bit of coconut oil onto your finger and apply it over this to seal in moisture.

Remember that this combination does need to be reapplied often to be truly effective. You should do this after drinking, eating, and showering. Continuous application is especially important when dealing with severely dry lips.

If you find this option a little too oily, then you can leave the coconut oil for nighttime use. Here, you simply leave the coconut oil on lips overnight and wake up with soft and supple lips. Once again, though, it is a good idea to use another moisturizing agent underneath the coconut oil.

Since coconut oil does tend to be oilier than traditional lip balms it is unlikely that you will be able to wear it under lipstick. It may cause the color to spread or bleed and will certainly not stay in place for long. Instead, you will have to use it as a stand-alone option in lieu of your other lip balms.

Coconut Oil as a Lip Mask

If you don’t like the idea of coconut oil as a lip balm, but still want the benefits instead, then you can use it as a mask. Here, you can use in conjunction with other healing or moisturizing ingredients. Depending on the ingredients used, you can use leave it on your lips for several minutes or for as long as you want.

Coconut Oil as a Lip Scrub

Do you have discolored lips? Well, this can sometimes be due to several layers of dead skin formed on your lips. Therefore, you can use coconut oil for dark lips by creating a scrub with the oil as a base. This will allow you to soften the layers of dead skin and make them easier to slough off. In addition to the coconut oil, you will have to use a slightly abrasive ingredient in the scrub.
