Is Coconut Water Filling: Will It Satiate You or Not?

October 2, 2023

Coconut water can fill you up initially but this effect may not last too long.

A lot of my clients are trying to limit their overall number of calories. To prevent eating too many snacks in between meals, many are curious about is coconut filling for you. Here is what I tell them…

In this post, I will discuss why coconut water is filling and just how long it can keep you satiated for. Let’s get started!

Does Coconut Water Fill You Up?

Drinking coconut water – as with any other liquid – can fill you up. This is because coconut water takes up space in your stomach. And, this can lead to a feeling of fullness as when you eat food.

However, you also need to keep in mind that coconut water may not keep you satiated for too long. This is because liquids are absorbed by the digestive system at a much faster rate than food. Since coconut water doesn’t have to be broken down and digested, it will pass out of your stomach more quickly.

Once this happens, the feeling of fullness can go away. And, you may return to being hungry once more.

Coconut water may be more satiating than water, though. Not only does coconut water contain various electrolytes, but it also has a sweet and pleasant flavor. This can make it seem much closer to eating food than drinking a glass of water.

Thus, this can temporarily trick your brain and taste buds into feeling that you have had something a bit more satisfying.

How Long Will Coconut Water Fill You Up For?

This is a difficult question to answer. This is because there are various factors that play a role in satiety.

Naturally, how much coconut water you drink will determine how full you feel. The more you drink, the more satisfied you will be.

You should also be aware that not everyone can be satiated at the same rate. This means that some people can feel full after only a glass of coconut water. Others may need to consume far more to experience the same result.

To top it all off, the rate of digestion and absorption can vary from one person to another as well. With individuals where the rate is quick, then you will end up feeling hungry much quicker. If the rate is slow, then you will be fuller for longer.

Most clear juices and simple liquids like coconut water may take anywhere from 20 minutes to 40 minutes to be absorbed by your system. During this period, you will slowly begin losing your feeling of satiation.

Can You Use Coconut Water for Weight Loss?

As mentioned, a lot of people want to know if coconut water is filling because they want to drink it in between meals. After all, the drink is low in calories and a healthier option than many fruit juices and carbonated drinks.

That being said, you do have to be careful about how much coconut water you drink. The calories can begin to add up. Therefore, drinking too much coconut water can actually contribute to weight gain. Not to mention, that, unlike water, coconut water does contain carbs and sugars.

More importantly than that, though, is that drinking too much coconut water can actually have a negative impact on your digestive system.

This is because coconut water is naturally high in potassium. Consuming too much potassium can lead to diarrhea. If you drink enough, you can also suffer from potassium toxicity. Additionally, coconut water may have a laxative effect on some. This is more likely to happen if you consume a large quantity of coconut water.

It is best to stick to around 6 to 8 ounces of coconut water a day, particularly if you have a tendency to experience side effects with coconut water.

To ensure that you can fill up with coconut water, break up the 6 to 8 ounces of recommended water into several doses. Then, follow this up with one or two glasses of water. This may be a more effective way of feeling full while avoiding any issues with drinking too much coconut water.
