If you want to sell wholesale coconut coir or coir products, then there are several elements that you need to know about. These include how to source the coir, which suppliers to consider, how to find green options, and how to choose between the different types.

Growing up in India, you could find items made from coconut coir everywhere – really, we took it for granted. However, at a young age, I learned the difference between good and bad quality. It is a skill that I have and use to this day.

Now, there has been an uptick in global interest in this particular material as more and more people look for natural material based goods. The issue, though, is that since most people don’t know too much about coconut coir, they make a lot of mistakes when sourcing the material or the products.

Well, this post is here to help you out. I will break down how to find sources, the processes and types you need to know about, eco-friendly options, and more. Let’s begin!

Know Your Sources

First things first, you should know where to get coconut coir from. Or, at the very least, you need to check that your manufacturers or suppliers are selecting coconut coir that has been sourced from the top producing regions.

Coconuts may be grown in countries all over the world, but that doesn’t mean that coconut coir is produced or processed in these regions. Remember, this industry is only just beginning to grow and expand. Due to this, most of the coconut coir is either produced in India or Sri Lanka.

Now, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia do export coconut coir. However, these countries do it on a far smaller scale. Furthermore, the type and quality of the fiber may not be on par with the coir that is produced in other countries.

Coconut Coir In the Hands

Selecting the Right Type of Coconut Coir

Coconut coir tends to be referred to as a single product. In reality, though, there are two types of coir. Since each type is used for different purposes, it is important to distinguish between each form. What's more, you should always double-check what kind your manufacturer or supplier is providing you with.

The two kinds of coconut coir are brown and white coir. Brown coir is dark brown in color and is recovered from fully ripened coconuts. It is traditionally used in upholstery padding, mats, and brushes. It is known for its abrasion and UV-resistant qualities.

White coir is recovered from the husks of coconuts that are harvested just before they ripen. This coir can be light brown or white in color. It can be used in mats, rope, yarn, and more.

In some instances, coir can also be categorized according to fiber length. Fibers that are less than 8 inches in length are known as mattress fiber. Bristle fiber is longer than this.

Selecting Coir Based on Processing Methods

As mentioned, coir can have a wide range of uses. The most common uses for coir, though, are either as a growing medium or as a textile. Needless to say, each of these industries has very different requirements when it comes to the coir. As such, you do need to pay attention to the processing methods.

If you are selling to individuals who will be using coconut coir as a growing medium, then you should check that the coir is moderately processed. In particular, look for coir that is soaked in fresh water rather than saltwater so that it will more suitable for plants.

At the same time, check whether certain chemicals or components have been used to process the coir. If many of the organic components of the coir have been removed, it may not work as a growing medium. However, if you are looking for textile, then additional processing may not matter as much.

Choosing a Greener Coir

Traditional methods of coir processing can have a negative impact on the surrounding environment. The processes can pollute surface waters and result in large pith dumps that can take quite a while to decompose.

Mechanical processes, on the other hand, are able to process and create the fibers at a faster rate, using less water resources. Not to mention, they result in less waste material as well. The only issue is that mechanical processes do result in lower quality fibers.

The good news is that some manufacturers are investigating and utilizing newer greener methods that maintain the quality of the fibers. As such, it is worth it to you to determine which methods your manufacturers are using and what the resulting quality is like.

Now, this may not seem all that important upfront, but you should think about the modern consumer. These days, consumers are greatly focused on buying greener products. And, they will often pay more for eco-friendly fibers as well.

Person Holding Coconut Coir

Which Type of Packaging is Right for You?

Coconut coir can be packaged in three different ways – bricks, blocks, and bags. Bricks and blocks are more tightly packed together, allowing you to ship more for less. Bricks are smaller quantities, while blocks are considerably larger.

On average, buying and shipping blocks and bricks will be a cheaper option for you. The loose bags tend to cost more. The catch, though, is that with blocks and bricks, you often have to expand the coir before you can use it. With the loose bags, however, you can skip this step.

These days, coconut coir can be reproduced as growing mats, pots, discs, etc. Thus, if your target market is interested in such products, it can be helpful to purchase the coir in this form. Bear in mind, coir in this form can often drive up the prices.

Negotiating the Cost

As with any product, the price of coconut coir is driven is demand by demand, market growth, environmental conditions, etc. Naturally, you will also have to pay more for better quality coir, particularly ones that have been processed via more natural or eco-friendly methods.

Still, it is important to always do your research before paying the asking price. Check that the cost is equivalent to the quality that you are paying. If you find that the current markets are too expensive, consider emerging ones. As demand for coconut coir grows, you may find that it is cheaper to source the coir from African or other Asian countries.

Despite this, always check on the quality of the coconuts that are grown as well as the processing methods that they go through.

Commercial vs. Independent Manufacturers – Selecting Your Suppliers

When looking for manufacturers or suppliers, you may want to choose a larger agency that has an efficient operation. And, for the most part, these are the most common suppliers for coconut coir. However, you may want to consider another option as well – independent suppliers.

There are small-scale operations that produce coconut coir and there are various advantages to signing up with them. To begin with, these operations tend to offer more consistent quality and results. In some instances (based on their processing practices), these operations can also be more eco-friendly.

Investing in smaller operations can also help to boost the local economy in those areas while netting your products for lower prices. Not to mention, this can often be a selling point to consumers. There is a greater interest in helping smaller businesses and communities thrive.

Labeling Rights

Last, but not least, you have to consider your labeling rights. These can change from one manufacturer to the next. Not to mention, you have to think about your own plans. Do you want to sell coir under your own brand name or are you fine with simply being another supplier in the chain?

If you do want to sell under your own brand name, then look for a company that will sell you private labels. You should bear in mind that this will probably cost you more. However, you will have greater control over how you sell the coconut coir products.

Now, if you are dealing with an independent supplier, particularly a smaller one, then you will have to make separate arrangements. Here, you will need to check if they have any specific requirements about the name under which the coir is sold.

Even if there isn't, it is a good idea to draw up a legal document for both parties to sign, taking the labeling rights into consideration. This way, you can guarantee that your profits aren't going to be impacted in the future.

Putting the Pieces Together: What is Desiccated Coconut? /what-is-desiccated-coconut/ Wed, 07 Jul 2021 09:13:24 +0000 /?p=2793 If you have ever wondered what is desiccated coconut, the answer is here! It is a dried and grated form of coconut meat.

In India, dried coconut isn't all that common. Therefore, I was only really made aware of desiccated coconut as an adult. Ever since I discovered it, though, it has become a favorite. I love to use in various dessert recipes to add a lovely crunch. It works well for decorating as well. Therefore, I set out to learn what desiccated coconut is all about and the best way to use it.

This is why this post contains all that you need to know about this ingredient. You can learn how to make your own desiccated coconut as well as the various types. In case you are looking for a substitute, I have got you covered there too. Now, let’s go learn everything we need to know!

Understanding Desiccated Coconut

Simply put, desiccated coconut is what you get when you dehydrate and grate coconut meat.

It is commonly for bakery or confectionery goods. In some cases, it may be added to savory recipes as well.

More often than not, it is a garnish or a decoration on pastries and baked goods.

How to Make Desiccated Coconut?

There is quite a process involved in making desiccated coconut.

First, the husk of the coconut is removed and the drupe is cut in half. The coconut water is discarded and the meat is thoroughly washed.

The kernels are then pasteurized in steam. Following this, the kernels are placed in a sulfite solution so that it can stabilize.

The kernels are dried using a stream dryer and then ground to form the desiccated coconut.

Desiccated Coconut vs. Shredded Coconut

Desiccated coconut is often mistaken for another form of coconut – shredded coconut.

Now, there is no denying that these two components do have similarities. However, they are by no means the same ingredient.

So, let’s take a look at how these two types differ from one another?

The easiest way to distinguish between desiccated and shredded coconut is to look at the size.

Desiccated coconut is ground rather than shredded. As such, it has a more powdery form, whereas shredded coconut consists of thin strips.

Traditionally, shredded coconut also has a little more moisture than desiccated coconut.

How to Make Desiccated Coconut from Shredded Coconut

So, how do you go about turning shredded coconut into a desiccated coconut?

Well, to begin with, you have to strip the shredded coconut of its moisture. Then, you need to grind it down to size.

You can learn how to do this step-by-step, in the section below…

Desiccated Coconut Recipes

These are the easiest options for turning shredded coconut into desiccated coconut.

Unsweetened Coconut Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 Bag of shredded coconut

Method

Step 1: Dry Out the Shredded Coconut

Heat the oven to 250°F.

Spread the coconut evenly on a baking sheet and place it in the oven.

Leave the coconut in the oven for 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how much moisture is in the shredded coconut.

It is time to take the coconut out of the oven when it is dry and brittle to the touch.

Step 2: Place the Coconut in a Food Processor

Place the shredded dried coconut in the food processor.

Pulse the coconut but stop after every pulse.

The goal is to ground the coconut finely, but still with notable texture. If you grind the coconut too finely, it will be more like coconut flour.

Sweetened Coconut Recipe

If you are using your desiccated coconut to round out a dessert, then you may prefer the sweetened version.

Here, you will first need to sweeten the shredded coconut before grinding it down to desiccated coconut form.

Ingredients

  • ¼th cup of water
  • 4 tsp. of sugar
  • 1 cup of shredded coconut

Method

Step 1: Make the Sugar Syrup

Pour the water and sugar into a pan and heat until the sugar is dissolved.

Continue to heat the mixture until it becomes slightly syrupy.

Step 2: Add the Coconut

Add the coconut to the syrup and mix well.

Stir the coconut and syrup until all the liquid has been absorbed.

Step 3: Dehydrate the Shredded Coconut

Heat the oven to 250°F.

Line the sweetened coconut on a baking tray and place it in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes or longer.

Keep checking the coconut for a dry and brittle texture.

Step 4: Place the Shredded Coconut in a Food Processor

Pulse the shredded coconut until you get the same texture as desiccated coconut.

Can I Use Shredded Coconut Instead Of Desiccated Coconut?

So, what if a recipe calls for desiccated coconut, but all you have is shredded coconut.

Can this work as a desiccated coconut substitute?

Unfortunately, you can’t directly use shredded coconut instead of desiccated coconut.

This is because, as mentioned, shredded coconut is larger and contains more moisture than the desiccated coconut.

However, with a few modifications, you can turn shredded coconut into the desiccated form. Then, you can use it as a substitute.

How to Use Desiccated Coconut

So, what it is that you can do with your freshly prepared desiccated coconut?

It is not uncommon for the unsweetened version to be included in granola or trail mix recipes as well. The coconut taste works well with the nutty and grainy ingredients included in such recipes.

It can even be added to hot or cold cereals, particularly if you wish to impart a more tropical flavor to the dish.

As for savory options, desiccated coconut is often used to cover battered covered prawns or chicken strips. This ingredient functions in a similar but tastier way as bread crumbs.

The pursuit of a low sodium diet is certainly nothing new. However, I am always looking for ways to make it easier for my clients to follow this diet. This is why I do extensive research into foods like coconut aminos to see if it is a good substitute for sodium-heavy foods like soy sauce.

In this post, I will outline what it is, how it was made, and breakdown the nutrient profile of coconut aminos. I also compare it to other commonly used ingredients and give you some idea of how to use it in your own food.

Learn about all this and more!

What is Coconut Aminos?

First off, let’s get to the bottom of what coconut aminos actually is.

Well, it is a savory seasoning sauce.

It is currently being advertised as a healthy alternative to soy sauce.

Let’s see how this statement holds up…

Food with coconut Aminos

What Do Coconut Aminos Taste Like?

Now, despite its name, coconut aminos doesn’t taste like coconut at all.

In fact, there isn’t even a hint of coconut in it.

Instead, it has a salty, umami flavor to it, along with some notes of sweetness.

Some compare the taste to that of light soy sauce.

Coconut aminos does have a lighter and sweeter taste than traditional soy sauce, however.

Coconut Aminos Nutrition Facts

It should be noted that the nutritional content of coconut aminos can vary from one brand to another.

The exact ingredients, ratios, and processing methods used will alter the numbers.

However, here is an idea of what the nutritional facts per tablespoon are like for this seasoning are like:

  • Calories: 15
  • Fat: 0g
  • Sodium: 270g
  • Carbs: 3g
  • Sugar: 3g
  • Protein: 0g

Are There Coconut Aminos Health Benefits?

Now, it is quite possible that you will have heard of all the miraculous health benefits of coconut aminos.

So, just how much of this is true and how much is pure marketing?

Well, unfortunately, most of this is simply conjecture.

For one thing, the seasoning doesn’t contain a significant number of nutrients.

As such, it is unlikely to have a noticeable impact on your health.

For another, most of the reported benefits of coconut aminos is actually based on other coconut-derived products.

There is no evidence to prove that coconut aminos could improve your health.

The one thing that can be said for this seasoning, however.

The level of sodium in coconut aminos is lower than many other seasonings.

As such, it is possible to use it as a substitute, particularly if it shares a similar flavor profile.

Nevertheless, beware that coconut aminos isn’t a low sodium food at all.

Due to this, it should be consumed in moderation.

What Are Coconut Aminos Used For?

Let’s take a look at just how you can use this seasoning in your food:

  • Marinade
  • Dressing and seasoning
  • To add more depth and complexity to dishes
  • As a substitute for salt

Using Coconut Aminos as a Substitute

As mentioned, you can use coconut aminos as a substitute for several seasonings.

So, let’s take a look at what it can be used instead of.

Coconut Aminos vs. Soy Sauce

Coconut aminos is most commonly used as a substitute for soy sauce.

This is largely due to the lower sodium content.

A single teaspoon of soy sauce contains around 280mg of sodium.

Coconut aminos, on the other hand, contains around 90mg.

There is also the fact that soy is a rather widespread allergen.

Thus, coconut aminos is a good choice for anyone who is cutting soy out of their diet as well.

Coconut Aminos vs. Liquid Aminos

Although they may sound similar, these two ingredients are worlds apart.

For one thing, liquid aminos is made from soybeans.

For another, it contains a significant amount of sodium – about 320mg per teaspoon.

This alone means that coconut aminos is the superior choice.

Coconut Aminos vs. Tamari

Then, there is tamari, another popular soy sauce substitute.

Once again, tamari is made from soybeans.

As such, it can’t be consumed with people who are allergic or sensitive to soy.

Also, a single teaspoon contains about 300mg of sodium.

Coconut aminos is the clear winner here as well.

Tips for Using Coconut Aminos as a Substitute

Before using coconut aminos as a substitute, taste test it first.

This is because every individual has a different opinion on the flavor profile.

For some, it is a perfect alternative for soy sauce.

Others, though, find it to be a bit too sweet.

Once you have tested it out, you can determine where you stand.

Also, once you gain a better understanding of the flavor, you will be better equipped to use it as you see fit.

You can then simply use it in any dish that will complemented by its specific flavor profile.

Where to Find Coconut Aminos

At the moment, coconut aminos is still a bit of a niche ingredient.

Thus, it may not be easy to get your hands on it.

You could try to pick some up at health food stores, however.

Those that cater to paleo diets, in particular, may have it stocked up.

Otherwise, you will need to look online to find a suitable brand.

Check the Nutritional Info

One of the reasons that people have switched to coconut aminos is because it is lower in sodium than soy sauce.

Nevertheless, you should be aware that each brand will contain a different sodium level.

In fact, this is true for all nutrients and even calorie content.

Thus, you should always read and compare the nutritional information before deciding on your preferred brand.

It is only natural to wonder if you should shell out extra money for the organic version of this food.

While coconuts have a low risk of pesticides, the same can’t always be said for coconut aminos.

The Different Types of Coconuts: Counting the Categories /types-of-coconuts/ Wed, 07 Jul 2021 07:37:00 +0000 /?p=2407 If you thought that there was just one kind of coconut, think again! There are actually two types of coconuts and several variations of coconut trees.

Now, you may be wondering what the types of coconut trees and drupes may have to do with nutrition. Well, it turns out quite a lot! It was only as I was completing my degree in clinical nutrition did I realize that there are actually various species of this plant. And, that the exact kind that you chose gave you a different kind of health benefit.

Below, you can find out exactly what these kinds of trees are as well as how they differ from one another. I will also breakdown how they can vary in nutrition. Let’s begin learning!

How Many Types of Coconuts Are There?

The same genetic study that identified where some coconuts originated from discovered another interesting fact.

It was found that there were two different kinds of coconuts. These are known as Niu kafa and Niu vai.

The Niu kafa has a more triangular shape and is oblong with a more fibrous husk. The Niu vai boasts a rounder shape and contains sweet coconut water.

men carrying coconuts

Brown Coconut vs. Green Coconut

Some people mistakenly believe that brown and green coconuts are different coconut varieties.

However, they both belong to the same species and tree.

The only variation is that green and brown coconuts are at different ripening stages. Green coconuts are young and haven’t ripened as yet. Brown coconuts, on the other hand, are fully matured.

Green coconuts don’t contain a great deal of meat yet. Instead, most people crack them open to enjoy the delicious liquid inside.

Brown coconuts don’t have much water, but they do contain a thicker layer of meat which has a higher fat content.

Types of Coconut Trees

There are two distinct types of coconut palms. These are known as the dwarf and the tall varieties.

However, several trees fall under each category.

Also, for agricultural and commercial purposes, you can find hybrid varieties.

Here is some information about each type along with a list of their uses.

Dwarf Varieties

As the name suggests, dwarf varieties are smaller than other trees. They are often between 5 and 7 meters in height.

These trees also flower at an earlier stage, reaching regular bearing in the ninth year. However, they can flower as early as in their third year.

The coconuts from these trees are smaller and have a rounded shape.

These trees can live up to 40 or 50 years.

Tall Varieties

The tall varieties can grow as tall as 18 meters, perhaps even more. They have a longer lifespan as well, often living up to 90 years.

This variety has a later flowering period and they may only be able to bear fruit after 8 or 10 years after they are planted.

The fruits have a spherical or oblong shape.

Hybrid Varieties

As mentioned, hybrid varieties are suitable for commercial purposes.

This is because they have an earlier flowering period and a far higher yield than their parents.

Not to mention, they tend to produce more copra and oil as well.

Uses

Coconut is often considered a versatile tree in many cultures. This is because virtually every element of it can be used by the local population.

One of its most well-known uses is the oil derived from the flesh. The desiccated form of the flesh can be submerged in water and used to produce coconut milk.

An increasing number of people are jumping on the keto trend. And, even if you aren't going fully keto, you are probably trying to reduce your carb intake. A lot of my clients have asked me if they can have coconut sugar on the keto diet and I have had to tell them that this sweetener has too many carbs.

Of course, you don’t have to take my word for it. In this post, I breakdown the nutritional profile of coconut sugar and show you exactly what it is made up of. I also go through some of the sweeteners that may be a better fit for your keto diet. Find out more here:

Can You Have Coconut Sugar on Keto?

What is the final answer? Is coconut palm sugar keto?

Unfortunately, the answer to this question would be no.

Coconut sugar is just a little too high in carbs for it to be considered keto.

So, while many other coconut derivatives do fit the keto bill, coconut sugar does not.

Coconut Sugar Nutrition

Here is the nutritional profile of coconut sugar, per teaspoon:

  • Calories: 15
  • Carbs: 4g
  • Protein: 0g
  • Fat: 0g
  • Fiber: 0g

Is Coconut Sugar Low Carb?

On the surface, 4g of sugar may not seem like a lot.

So, does this mean that the carbs in coconut sugar is low enough?

Not really. This is because coconut sugar has the same amount of carbs per teaspoon as white sugar!

Is the Glycemic Index of Coconut Sugar Lower?

Of course, the carb content is only half of the story.

It is just as important to understand the impact of coconut sugar on your blood sugar levels.

Well, it would appear that coconut sugar does score lower on the glycemic index than cane sugar.

However, the results do vary.

Despite this, there is some evidence to show that your blood sugar level may not rise as much when you consume coconut sugar.

Is Coconut Palm Sugar Good for You?

OK, so coconut sugar can’t be a part of a keto diet.

Can be considered a healthier alternative to white sugar, though?

Well, the jury is still out on this.

Now, you could make the case that coconut sugar does contain a minute amount of nutrients as it doesn’t undergo heavy processing.

Nevertheless, there are only trace amounts of these nutrients.

You would have to consume a significant amount of coconut sugar to get any benefit.

As mentioned, though, coconut sugar may not cause as much of a spike in your blood sugar levels as white sugar.

If this is an advantage that you are interested in, then coconut sugar could do the trick for you.

Keto Friendly Sweeteners – What Makes the Grade?

Let’s switch gears for a moment.

To really appreciate whether or not there is a link between coconut sugar and keto, you have to understand what kind of sweeteners are allowed.

You are still allowed a certain number of carbs on keto – around 50 grams a day.

Since sugar falls under this category, your sweetener needs to be far lower than this accommodation.

Keep in mind, your total carb intake has to be equal to or less than 50 grams.

Thus, the sweetener has to be low enough in carbs to make allowances for other carbohydrates that you may be consuming within a day.

At the same time, when on the keto diet, you have to select sweeteners that won’t cause much of a spike in your blood sugar levels.

Coconut Sugar

What is Coconut Sugar?

You need to understand what is meant by the term “coconut sugar”.

Despite its name, coconut sugar isn’t actually made from coconuts.

Instead, it is derived from the sap of the flower buds from the coconut palm tree.

A Bit Off the Top: How to Open a Young Coconut /how-to-open-a-young-coconut/ Wed, 07 Jul 2021 07:26:00 +0000 /?p=2818 There are two stages to opening a young coconut – cutting the excess coir and opening the coconut shell. In total, there are six steps involved in this process.

As a child, I watched all of the adults in my family cut open coconuts, and then, finally, it was my turn. I have spent years opening up coconuts and have perfected the process for me over this period. Now, I want to show you how to open a young coconut.

This post contains step-by-step instructions on how to get a coconut open. I also talk about the tools that I use as well as some of the options that you can try as well. Now, let’s get to work!

How to Open a Fresh Young Coconut

There are several stages to opening a young coconut. To make it easier to understand, these will be broken down for you…

How to Cut a Young Coconut

This involves removing the excess coir at the top of the coconut. You can then get closer to the coconut shell that houses the coconut meat and water.

What You Need

  • Peeled Young Coconut
  • Cleaver

Step 1: Identify the Point of Access

Set the peeled coconut on the counter so that it is balancing on the bottommost flat portion.

The top portion of the coconut may be slightly pointed – this is the portion that you need to remove.

Step 2: Position the Coconut Properly

Set the coconut on its side on a cutting board.

If this part is too rounded, remove some of the coir so that the coconut can remain still.

Grasp the coconut in your non-dominant hand, pressing it against the cutting board to steady it.

Step 3: Cut Away the Excess Coir

Use your cleaver to slowly cut away the coir.

Make sure to move the knife away from you as you cut a piece off.

It is best to strip away small, thin pieces as these will be easier to cut through.

Eventually, you will expose the brown shell. Remove all the coir from the shell so that the topmost part is completely uncovered.

How to Open a Coconut with a Knife

Now it’s time to open the coconut shell. You will need to apply some strength and pressure as the shell can be a bit tough.

What You Will Need

  • Butter knife
  • Chef’s knife

Step 1: Locate the Soft Spot

The curved top of the coconut shell be exposed.

Take the butter knife and press the knife along the bottom of the exposed portion. Make sure to use significant strength.

When your knife hits a soft spot with enough force, the knife will penetrate the shell.

Step 2: Create Leverage in the Shell

Dig the butter knife into the shell and create a sizable slot.

This is what you will use to place the chef’s knife and open up the coconut.

Step 3: Cut the Top of the Coconut Off

Place your non-dominant hand on the side of the coconut and hold it in place.

Slip the chef’s knife into the slot.

Move the knife horizontally so that it is slicing through the top of the coconut. Make a sawing motion to move through the shell more easily.

Make it a point to steady the coconut so that it doesn’t slip during this process.

Once the coconut has been opened, you will have access to the coconut water. You can slip a straw in and enjoy the drink right away. If you wish to store it for later, pour the coconut water into a jug or container. Then, you will be able to get to the meat. The young coconut meat can easily be scooped out with a spoon. If you are having trouble reaching all the meat, you may need to create a wider opening in the shell for better access.

Do You Need Tools to Learn How to Open a Green Coconut?

There are actually coconut opener tools that you can purchase.

These can include mallets and other sharp tools to help you get the outer layers of the coconut open.

Now, some people may find these tools quite useful, particularly if you have never tried your hand at this task before.

At the same time, people have been cracking open coconuts with readily available tools for years.

In Thailand, for instance, you will find street vendors whacking open green coconuts using nothing but cleavers.

In the end, this decision is up to you. You can choose to buy a set of tools or learn to do it the old-fashioned way!

shaved broken coconuts

How to Open a Shaved Coconut – Do You Need to Peel It Further?

Most of the coconuts that you buy have the tough husk removed.

Thus, you are left with the coir that houses the shell.

This coir can be rather thick on all sides. Thus, you need to determine whether you need to shave it down further.

Now, this is only really necessary if you want to get to the meat of the coconut.

Since you will require a wider opening to do this, you may need to remove a larger portion of the coir.

This can be done with the help of a cleaver or a similarly sized knife.

If you are only going to extract the coconut water, though, you only need to hack off the top of the coconut.

As such, there is no need to go through the hassle of shaving down the rest of the coconut.

Is It Easy to Learn How to Open a Young Coconut at Home?

Coconuts can seem like rather tough and sturdy fruits or drupes.

Thus, the idea of hacking away at them to get them open can seem like a job reserved for professionals.

Despite how it may look, it isn't all that difficult, although there is a bit of learning curve involved.

Now, you do have one advantage on your side – young coconuts are easier to open than mature ones.

This is because green coconuts have softer shells than brown coconuts. Therefore, you should find it easier to get through.

This concludes your guide on how to open a young coconut. Thanks to this information, you will have no problem enjoying fresh coconut water and meat in the future.

Don’t Sugar-Coat It: What Is Coconut Nectar? /what-is-coconut-nectar/ Wed, 07 Jul 2021 01:49:00 +0000 /?p=3032 Coconut nectar is a natural sweetener that is extracted from coconut blossoms.

Many of my clients are constantly looking for alternatives to processed sugar. Thus, in addition to being asked “what is coconut nectar”, I also get the question, is coconut nectar healthy for me. Well, while this ingredient does have its perks, it isn't necessarily a healthy food.

In this post, I tackle whether coconut nectar is healthy, how you can use it, and how it compares to other sweeteners. This ensures that you add it to your food only after you know exactly what it is. Let’s do some research!

How Can You Use Coconut Nectar?

If you are planning on using it in your food, how can you use coconut nectar?

Well, due to its natural caramel-like flavor, you will find that it is best used to make caramels and candies.

It also works well in homemade syrups or if you want to directly drizzle it over breakfast foods.

You should be careful about using coconut nectar when recipes call for a large amount of sweetener.

In these instances, some of the more complex flavors present in coconut nectar could end up overpowering the rest of the ingredients.

What Does Coconut Palm Nectar Taste Like?

If you haven’t ever tried it before, you may be curious about what the nectar tastes like.

Well, interestingly enough, it doesn’t have even a hint of coconut in it.

Rather this sweetener has a deep rich flavor to it with a hint of caramel.

You would find that it tastes similar to brown sugar or molasses. Some even compare it to maple syrup.

Is Coconut Nectar Healthy?

Here’s the million dollar question, though, does coconut nectar have health benefits?

Well, you will often find manufacturers assuring you that coconut nectar is chock full of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

Well, it is true that coconut sugar does have some of these nutrients.

Unfortunately, these nutrients are only available in minute quantities.

As such, it is unlikely that you would be able to consume enough coconut nectar to actually gain any benefits.

You will be far better off eating foods that are actually high in these nutrients.

Coconut Nectar Glycemic Nectar

Now, there are different ways to measure how healthy a particular ingredient is. Due to this, it is a good idea to investigate the impact of coconut nectar on your blood sugar levels. Coconut nectar has a glycemic index of around 35. Foods with a GI that is lower than 55, fall under the category of low glycemic index. So, coconut nectar can technically be considered a low GI food. In that sense, it is probably better for you than regular table sugar.

Coconut Nectar vs. Coconut Sugar – What’s the Difference?

You will have probably heard of coconut sugar as well.

So, what is the difference between these two ingredients – are they the same?

Well, coconut sugar is actually derived from coconut nectar. It is what you get when the nectar is dehydrated or heated.

Essentially, coconut sugar is the granulated version of coconut nectar.

Coconut Nectar vs. Other Sweeteners

It is time to take a look at how well coconut nectar holds up against other natural sweeteners.

Coconut Nectar vs. Honey

nectar healthier than honey? Well, this does depend on how you look at things.

Honey is known for its antibacterial properties and is able to help with digestive issues and sore throats.

However, it is largely made up of glucose and thus has a high glycemic index.

Thus, if a lower GI is important to you, then coconut nectar may be the better fit for your diet.

Bee's honey

Coconut Nectar vs. Agave

On the surface, agave syrup may seem to have a one-up on coconut nectar.

After all, it has a lower GI – 15 – than coconut nectar.

If you take a closer look, though, you will notice that agave syrup is incredibly high in fructose.

This can be a problem because fructose is metabolized by the liver.

Thus, if you consume an excess of fructose, you may be placing an immense amount of pressure on your liver.

This is especially true if you need to use a great deal of sweetener in a recipe.

How is Coconut Nectar Made?

To really understand coconut nectar, you must first appreciate how it is “made”?

The truth is that coconut nectar isn’t made at all. Instead, it is extracted.

This is because the nectar is extracted from the coconut blossoms or flowers.

It is then gently heated until it thickens and is suitable for consumption.

Coconut Nectar and Diets

Now, one of the reasons that people consider eating coconut nectar is because they are on one kind of diet or the other. Some individuals may count calories for weight management or be adhering to a more naturalistic diet like paleo.

How does coconut hold up in such circumstances?

Coconut Nectar Calorie Content

On average, a single tablespoon (13g) of coconut nectar amounts to around 50 calories.

The exact calorie count can vary, but it is unlikely to be all that much higher.

To get a better understanding of this, you should know that a tablespoon of white sugar amounts to around 49 calories.

Therefore, while coconut nectar won’t undo your diet, it certainly isn’t going to help it much either.

Is Coconut Nectar Paleo?

There is some confusion about whether or not coconut nectar is paleo.

On the one hand, it is derived from a natural source. On the other, it is still considered an added sugar and isn’t entirely healthy.

If you are on a paleo diet, your best course of action would be to enjoy coconut nectar in moderation.

So, this is all that you need to know about coconut nectar. If you were considering using it in your food, you now have the total picture.

Do Coconuts Grow on Palm Trees? Climbing Down the Family Tree /do-coconuts-grow-on-palm-trees/ Tue, 06 Jul 2021 05:52:28 +0000 /?p=6462 Do coconuts grow on palm trees? Well, yes and no. While coconuts do grow up on coconut palm trees, they can’t be found on other types of palm trees.

My home state in India was quite popular among foreign tourists. The one thing that confused a lot of them was sighting the many coconut palm trees that dotted the area. Sure, they looked like the palm trees that you would find in places like California, but they didn’t look quite right.

Well, this is what I will be tackling in this post. I am going to give you more information about coconut trees and how they differ from other kinds of palm trees.

What Trees Do Coconuts Grow In?

Coconuts grow on coconut palm trees, which are also known by their scientific name, Cocos Nucifera. The coconut palm is quite tall, reaching heights of between 50 and 100 feet when full grown.  The leaves are un-branched at the top of the trunk. The long, spindly leaves grow in pairs on opposite sides of each other.

After about six years into the growing period, the tree will bear female flowers which, in turn, will bear the coconut. Now, there are two types of trees, depending on the variety of the coconut palm. There is the dwarf and the tall tree.

The tall trees grow at a slower rate, reaching maturity later on. However, they do grow higher and produce coconuts that work well for coconut oil. The dwarf trees, on the other hand, can bear fruit up to a year or two sooner. These coconuts are ideal for their coconut water.

Now, these trees are largely found in Indonesia, the Philippines, India, and Sri Lanka. However, they occur naturally all over the world. The trees can even be grown in the southern part of Florida as well as the southernmost tip of Texas and Hawaii.

Is a Palm Tree and a Coconut Tree the Same Thing?

Now, when you refer to a palm tree, you are probably talking about a specific plant. There is a good chance that you are describing the tall trees usually found on sandy beaches, tropical areas, or in hot, arid areas.

Well, what many people don’t realize is that there is more than one kind of palm tree. This means that although a coconut tree is considered a palm tree, not all palm trees are coconut trees.

Palm trees fall under the category of Arecaceae, which are woody vines, shrubs, or trees. This family boasts about 200 genera and 3,000 species. Thus, there are more types of palm trees than you can imagine!

Here are a couple of tips on how to tell the two kinds of trees apart:

Coconut Palm Tree

  • Feathery shaped leaves that can be up to four feet wide
  • Slender and textured trunk
  • Topped by fronds
  • Fibrous covered fruit

Standard Palm Tree

  • Leaves have fan-like fronds
  • Can have long, slender trunks or short, fat trunks
  • Can have single or clustered trunks
  • Bushy, pinnate fronds

Where Do Coconut Palm Trees Grow Naturally?

Thanks to the drupes that they produce, coconuts are considered to be a life sustaining part of island and coastal ecosystems. It is why they are found in over 80 countries around the world. The tree is largely associated with the Asian-Pacific region.

Nevertheless, you can still find the trees in the east and west coasts of Africa. Furthermore, it is found in Central and South America as well. Many of the regions in the Indian, Caribbean, and Pacific oceans rely on coconuts for their economies.

One of the reasons that the coconut palm is available in so many countries has to do with the nature of the drupe. The fruit is naturally buoyant and holds up to long journeys in seawater quite well. And, when it finally washes up on shore, it is able to establish itself quite readily.

Do Palm Trees in Florida Have Coconuts?

You aren't going to find coconut palms all over Florida, but they are quite common in South Florida. They tend to thrive in the warmer and more coastal parts of the region. The trees here can be a bit more unique than other coconut palms. You will often find that the trunk has a bit more curve to them.

So why do the coconut palms grow here and not in other parts of the state? Well, this all comes down to the climate. While these trees do thrive in warmer temperatures, they also require humidity and consistent rainfall. And, these are precisely the kind of conditions that South Florida offers up.

Why Don’t Palm Trees in California Have Coconuts?

Another part of the States that is known for its palm trees is California. If you take a closer look, though, you will see that these are coconut palms at all. This is because the climate in California is too dry, making it inhospitable to the trees.

Then, what kind of palm tree can you find in the Golden State? There are actually several species here, but only one is native to Southern California – Washingtonia filifera, which is also known as California fan palm. The rest of the species of palm trees have been imported.

As mentioned, the native palm trees aren't found all over California – mostly in Southern California. This is because the trees are closer to natural water sources like in the Colorado desert. The other imported palms, though, are found closer to cities as they tap into manmade water sources.

Who would have thought that there was so much to know about coconut palms and palm trees in general? Although you may associate these trees with sunny, tropical places, you now know that there is quite a bit of diversity here!

Is Coconut Jelly Good for You? - Food for Thought /is-coconut-jelly-good-for-you/ Fri, 02 Jul 2021 00:24:05 +0000 /?p=6347 While coconut jelly can be high in fiber, it doesn’t have enough nutrients to be considered a health food.

Many Asian countries use coconut and its derivatives in many different ways. As a result, I am always delighted to discover treats such as coconut jelly or nata de coco. Since it is my job to know exactly what my clients are eating, I decided to do some research into is coconut jelly good for you.

While coconut jelly does have some good components to it, I wouldn’t add it to your diet too often. From health benefits to calories, here is a breakdown of coconut jelly.

thai coconut jelly

Does Coconut Jelly Have Health Benefits?

Coconut jelly is considered a high fiber food product. It can be made from either fermented coconut water or coconut milk, but coconut water is the more common ingredient. This food has been found to be low in fat, high in cellulose, and contain no cholesterol at all.

In one study, scientists combined nata de coco with other high fiber ingredients such as unpolished rice, mung beans, and sweet corn. The experiment showed that regular consumption of this supplement led to lower triglyceride levels. This could potentially help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Of course, it can be difficult to say whether coconut jelly, by itself, could have the same impact. Nevertheless, this can be a delicious way to incorporate more fiber into your diet. In doing so, you may be able to enjoy better gut health.

You should be aware that the coconut jelly can be rather high in carbs, though. This is because it is almost always sweetened. A single serving can carry up to 29g of carbs, 27g of which are sugar. Thus, it isn't a dessert that you want to indulge in too often.

Also, if the coconut jelly is made from coconut milk, then you have to be careful of the fat content. There is around 3.4 grams of fat per tablespoon. And, while coconut milk does have proteincoconut water doesn’t – the milk doesn’t have fiber.

Vietnamese Coconut Jelly with Fruits

How Many Calories are in Coconut Jelly?

Coconut jelly is pretty low in calories. A serving of 180g has just 130 calories. Of course, this can vary from one recipe to another as some people add may add more or less sugar. If the coconut jelly is commercially produced, make sure to check the number of calories as these can vary quite drastically.

Another thing to be aware of is that if the nata de coco is made from coconut milk that the number of calories will automatically be higher. This is because a tablespoon of coconut milk can have up to 30 calories. Therefore, this is something that you will need to factor in.

So, there you have it! Coconut jelly does have its good points – it is low in fat and calories and contains plenty of fiber. Nevertheless, it can necessarily be classified as a health food since it is rather high in sugar. Still, you should be able to enjoy it every now and then without feeling guilty.
